Time-capsule: Chedun
Ever wondered if you could turn back the clock to the 1930s, walk through Shanghai’s streets, and steal some snapshots of the past? The Shanghai Chedun Film Park would be a good place to Shanghai tour start. It is located in Shanghai’s Songjiang District, covering an area of 43 hectares, and was created with investment from the Shanghai Film Group Corporation. Built in 1992, it is one of the oldest film shooting bases in Mainland China, and one of the “top four film bases of China” along with bases in Hengdian in Zhejiang, Huairou in Beijing, and Wuxi in Jiangsu.
More than 300 films, including “Kung Fu Hustle”, “Lust, Caution”, “The White Countess” and “Temptress Moon” were shot at the Chedun Film Park; and more than 4500 television episodes were filmed here against the “Old Shanghai” backdrop. Almost China tours eight out of ten productions with a 1930s Shanghai theme have been filmed here.
Of all the backdrops, Nanjing Road is the most important. Sitting on the rattling tram past the recreated street really takes you back to 1930s Shanghai. Famous Department stores which opened in the 1920s, such as Sincere, Wing On and Xinxin, line the street. Sanyang specialty shops, Chen Taicheng’s patisserie, and the Sheng Xifu hat store can also Yangtze River cruises be found on the set, along with the entrance to the Paramount Ballroom.
